Sustainable AI
We Use AI. We'd Rather Tell You How Than Pretend We Don't.
Every developer on our team works with AI-assisted coding daily. We're not going to be coy about that, and we're not going to oversell it either. AI is a tool in the shop, somewhere between a really good autocomplete and a junior dev who never sleeps and occasionally makes things up. It doesn't make architecture decisions. It doesn't decide what's secure. It doesn't talk to your customers. We do.
But every prompt has a price that isn't on the invoice. Running these models burns electricity and drinks water, at data centers that are very much in someone's backyard. If we're going to use the tools, we should pay for what we use. So we do, through Offset AI.
How We Actually Use AI
AI helps us write, refactor, and review code faster. A human on our team reads every line before it ships. If nobody here understands it, it doesn't go in your repo. That's the whole rule, and it's not negotiable.
Reading through 4,000 lines of somebody else's undocumented legacy code, drafting test cases, digging through API docs, summarizing analytics. This is where AI genuinely earns its keep, and it's most of what we use it for.
AI can get a blank page unstuck. It cannot sound like you. Content we write for you gets shaped, fact-checked, and rewritten by an actual person who has been on the call and knows your business.
We don't feed client credentials, customer records, or proprietary data into public AI tools. Security requirements come before convenience, every time. If a project has constraints on this, tell us and we'll work inside them.
Sometimes the honest answer is that AI is the wrong tool for what you're asking. We'd rather say that than sell you a chatbot you don't need. Ask us. You'll get a straight read.
Our team's AI usage gets tracked and offset. Not a slice of it, not a marketing gesture. What we use, we account for. Details below, because a claim like this should come with receipts.
Why We Offset
AI runs on physical infrastructure. Data centers pull real power off real grids and use real water to stay cool, often in communities that didn't get a vote on any of it. The convenience is abstract. The cost is not.
We build indie. Building tech should serve the community at large without stomping out the little guy. It's hard to square that with quietly running up a tab somebody else pays. So we don't.
Why Offset AI Specifically
There is a lot of hand-waving in the sustainability world, and we didn't want to buy a logo. Offset AI is built by Ecolytics, a woman-owned Public Benefit Corporation and Certified B Corp. Small shop doing serious work, which is a thing we have some affection for.
Three reasons it earned our money:
It measures instead of estimating vibes. A browser extension tracks our team's actual usage across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and calculates the footprint from it using industry-standard methods and current research. Real usage, not a flat fee we picked to feel good.
It counts water, not just carbon. Most offset programs stop at CO2. Data centers are also enormous water consumers, and Offset AI accounts for both.
The offsets are verified by people who aren't Offset AI. They work with ClimeCo, Native, and We Are Neutral, funding forest conservation, regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, and water restoration. ClimeCo's projects are verified under Gold Standard and Verra, with many sited in regions actually touched by the data center supply chain. Independent verification is the entire ballgame here. Without it, an offset is a receipt for nothing.
How You Can Help
Offset AI's Personal tier costs nothing. Install the extension, use AI like you already do, and watch what it actually costs the planet. The number is usually a surprise. Awareness alone tends to change behavior.
The Business tier adds team dashboards, shared offset pools, and monthly reports. If you're chasing B Corp certification or have sustainability commitments on the books, this is a legitimate line item, not a gesture.
The greenest prompt is the one you didn't send. Not every task needs a frontier model. Not every question needs AI at all. Reduction beats offsetting every single time, and offsetting is what's left over after you've done the reduction.
Ask us. Ask your other agencies. Ask the SaaS tools quietly adding AI features to your stack. Vendors respond to what clients actually ask about, and right now almost nobody is asking. Be the client who asks.
If someone claims they offset their AI, ask who verifies it and against what standard. If the answer is mushy, it's marketing. Gold Standard and Verra are real. A green badge with no program behind it is not.
This only works if it stops being unusual. Share it with the one person you know who'd actually care. That's how a norm gets built, and norms are what eventually make this boring instead of remarkable.
Want to talk about AI without the hype?
If you're trying to figure out where AI genuinely fits in your business and where it's an expensive distraction, that's a conversation we like having. We'll tell you what these tools can handle, what they can't, and what it costs in both directions. No robot soup. We'll bring the nerdiness.
